Historically, all we have been able to offer patients with dry AMD is nutritional supplements to help slow it down. Just a few months ago, The FDA approved use of the Valeda light device, which uses low-level light therapy for the treatment of dry macular degeneration. We are pleased to share that we can now offer this technology to patients with dry AMD at PCVI in Eugene.
This new device uses light therapy to reduce drusen (the deposits of debris under the retina that can be toxic to retinal cells) and improve the health of the cells of the retina. It is indicated for patients who have dry macular degeneration and vision that is 20/30 or worse. It should not be used for patients with wet macular degeneration, epilepsy, sensitivity to yellow or red light, or light-triggered migraines. In the US clinical trial that enabled approval, 60% of patients improved 1 line of vision and about 20% of patients improved 2 lines of vision. Further, over 2years, it reduced risk of development of geographic atrophy (a severe form of AMD) by more than 75%.

This is a truly remarkable advancement for macular degeneration patients that does not involve injections, and is done in the office; there are no activity restrictions or additional medications
afterward, and you can eat normally. Light treatments are about 7 minutes in office with 3 treatments a week for 3 weeks, 3 times a year. In our practice, Drs. Jernberg, Bautista, and
Lorenzen are happy to offer this procedure. If you’d like to find out if you are a candidate for Valeda light therapy, please call us at 541-343-5000 to schedule an appointment.
