Keep Your Eyes Safe This 4th of July: Tips for Oregon Families
The 4th of July is a time for fireworks, barbecues, and celebrating our beautiful state of Oregon. Unfortunately every year, some people spend their holiday in the emergency room with serious eye injuries—many of them children.
At PCVI, we want you to enjoy Independence Day safely. Here are some important reminders to protect your vision while celebrating.
1. Keep a Safe Distance
Even legal fireworks can cause burns and eye injuries if you’re too close.
- Stay at least 15–20 feet away while fireworks are being lit.
- Never let children light or hold fireworks.
- Always supervise kids closely, even with sparklers.
Did you know? Sparklers burn at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt glass. Many eye injuries happen when kids wave sparklers near their face or each other.
2. Wear Eye Protection
If you’re lighting fireworks, wear protective eyewear like safety glasses or goggles.
- Regular glasses and sunglasses are not enough.
- Keep a pair handy for anyone helping with fireworks.
3. Know What to Do in an Eye Emergency
If someone gets an eye injury:
Do NOT rub or rinse the eye.
Do NOT apply pressure or try to remove objects.
Cover the eye lightly with a clean cloth.
Seek emergency medical care right away.
Quick treatment can make the difference between saving or losing vision.
4. Enjoy Oregon’s Professional Fireworks Shows
One of the safest ways to celebrate is to leave the fireworks to the pros. Oregon has displays in cities like Portland, Eugene, Bend, and along the coast.
