Another entry Into Our “Common Questions” series. This time it’s all about LASIK, SMILE, and PRK!
As the procedures are similar, we’ve grouped some of your questions together as the answers are the same for most. We are here to answer these an other questions you may have so give us a call today! Enjoy!
When can I drive and go back to work?
Generally the next day. For patients who work on computers, take frequent
breaks the first few days after LASIK, as patients on computers tend to stare and
not blink, which can aggravate dry eye which can cause visual fluctuations.
When can I exercise?
You can do cardio and lift weights the next day. No swimming for 3 days
however.
When can I swim or be in a hot tub?
Usually 3 days after LASIK or SMILE; 1 week after PRK.
When can I put on eye makeup or fake eyelashes?
Usually 3 days after LASIK or SMILE; 1 week after PRK5. How long does the vision keep getting better for?
Vision generally improves for 1-2 weeks after LASIK or SMILE; visual recovery
usually takes 1-2 months after PRK.
How long will the eyes feel dry?
Generally within 2-3 months, the eye comfort returns to baseline. Corneal nerves
are typically healed within 6 months.
How long will night halos take to get better?
Usually within 4-6 weeks rings around lights at night after LASIK fade away or
return to baseline.
Why choose LASIK, SMILE, or PRK for any given patient?
Your doctor will examine your eye, review your corneal scans and prescription,
and listen to your lifestyle and visual needs to come up with the best treatment
plan for you. Depending on your corneal shape and thickness, amount of
correction, lifestyle, presence of corneal scars or roughness, and other factors,
your doctor will come up with a recommended option or options.
What happens if I move my eye during the procedure?
This is a natural and understandable concern. There is a flashing light for
patients to focus on during the procedure, and the computer is tracking your eye
more than 1000 times/second during the procedure to ensure precise laser
alignment. Furthermore, the doctor is controlling the laser pedal and gently
holding your head in position. If the eye were ever to go out of the field of the
laser, the laser automatically cuts off (so there is no risk of lasering anywhere
else on the head).
Will I get something to help relax?
Yes, we give relaxing medicine before the laser, and feel free to ask for extra
medication or pre-medication the night before if you are anxious.
Can my pets sleep with me?
Not for the first 3 nights.
